Socrates on "Love" in Plato's "Symposium"

This is a 5 page paper discussing Socrates' argument on "love" found in Plato's "Symposium". In Plato's "Symposium", Socrates refutes the claims of his companions that love is beautiful and that love is a god. To do this he uses the arguments he learned presented to him by his teacher Diotima. Through Diotima's arguments we learn that Love had a mixed mortal/immortal parentage and because of this the nature of love is not immortal or beautiful but is considered in constant flow between the world of man and that of the gods and also holds the characteristics of its parents: from his mother Poverty, Love can be poor, ugly and ignorant; and from his father Plenty, he can be enterprising, wise or a hunter. As Diotima shows to Socrates that man ultimately finds that love is the possession of everlasting good and therefore will make him happy, she also explains why man's eagerness for love is felt because of the need to procreate during the time when he is most beautiful. Despite this common desire in man, not all men desire the same things to make them happy which is further the result of Love's flexibility and ability to bond all men. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Socrates On Trial

6 pages in length. As a juror sitting on the trial of Socrates, it has become clear that this man has society's best interests at heart. The issue at hand concerns the nature of man, his behavior and how that behavior has a domino effect on everything else. The question is raised as a means by which to address man's lost quest to do the right thing, an aim that has long been both challenged and failed as far as Socrates is concerned. What makes this case particularly interesting is the extent to which his personal views are in opposition with so many of his philosophical counterparts, especially when it comes to formulating the fundamental basis of human character. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Socrates in the "Apology" and Ovid and "Metamorphoses"

A 3 page comparison of these two works and men. The author of this paper contends that there are many similarities between Ovid's "Metamorphoses" and Socrates' "Apology", not the least of which is the fact that Ovid could be said to be a recreation of Socrates, a manifestation of that "gadfly" Socrates warns of in the "Apology" which acts to stir the great steed of the Athenian state into action. While Socrates in this analogy feeds upon the blood of Athens, Ovid feeds upon the blood of Rome. No additional sources are listed.
